Alpana Station
We moved on from Carrieton to Alpana Station which is 5kms south of Blinman in the Flinders Ranges. It is a 60,000 acre sheep station that has setup areas for people to stay at the station. This includes the Shearer’s quarters, Powered Ensuite sites, unpowered bush sites and a recreated pine hut Shepard’s hut made just as it would have been in 1860.
It is an absolutely beautiful spot set in the South Australian Alps. I use the term Alps half jokingly as, little known fact, Blinman is the highest town in South Australia. At around 600 metres it is pretty much the same height above sea level as Mount Dandenong where we live. They even get the occasional winter snowfalls.
Sally and David our hosts were lovely as well as sheep dogs Tanner, Rusty and Robbie. Robbie was particularly interested in Maggie as she had only just come off Heat a couple of days before.
There are walking tracks, self drive 4wd tracks and Sally does guided tours of the station and the surrounding Flinders ranges. We went on a half day tour of the station which ranges from Red Gum lined creek beds, plant less rock covered hills, native pine covered hills and includes the Heisenberg and ABC ranges.
